AWS AI Practitioner Exam: Question Count and Format

AWS lists 65 questions for the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam. The important distinction is between the number you answer and the number used to calculate your result: the total includes both scored and unscored questions. You still work through the complete exam rather than a separately labelled scored section. Do not build a study plan around answering only 50 questions, and do not expect the remaining 15 to appear together at the end. Their placement is not identified for candidates. For pacing and practice, 65 is therefore the relevant question count, while 50 explains the scoring structure.

The most useful source hierarchy is straightforward: use the AWS certification page for the headline exam details and the official exam guide for response types, scoring and content coverage. Third-party summaries may omit the unscored items or describe only the most familiar question formats. Those omissions can make two otherwise similar descriptions appear contradictory. When checking information, confirm that it refers specifically to AIF-C01, not AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate or another certification. Different AWS exams can have different durations and requirements, so a general AWS certification overview is not a reliable substitute for this exam's documentation.

The official AIF-C01 exam guide describes five response types. Multiple-choice questions require one correct response, while multiple-response questions require more than one correct response. Ordering questions ask you to put responses into the correct sequence. Matching questions require you to associate responses with the appropriate prompts. Case studies use a shared scenario followed by two or more questions about it; each question in the case study is evaluated separately. Prepare to interpret each set of instructions rather than assuming every screen asks for a single selection. The response format changes how you demonstrate knowledge, even when the underlying topic is familiar.

AWS does not provide a guaranteed allocation of questions across these response types in the exam guide. It would therefore be misleading to promise a particular number of matching questions or case studies on your exam. Instead, practise the reasoning each format requires: distinguishing the best answer from plausible alternatives, checking all required selections, understanding process sequences and reading scenario constraints carefully. For a case study, identify the business objective and any requirements concerning privacy, cost or model behaviour before evaluating the options. Treat practice questions as exercises in these skills, not as a prediction of your exact exam.

The standard AWS AI Practitioner exam duration is 90 minutes. Dividing that by 65 questions gives approximately 83 seconds per question, but this is a planning average rather than a recommended limit for every item. A short concept question may take much less time, while a scenario or matching task may need longer. Plan to move efficiently through straightforward items so that more demanding questions have room in your schedule. The advertised duration refers to the exam itself; allow additional time around your appointment for check-in and other delivery requirements, following the instructions supplied by the testing provider.

A practical rehearsal is to complete a 65-question practice session within 90 minutes, including any review time you intend to use. For example, reserving 10 minutes for checking answers leaves 80 minutes for your first pass, or roughly 74 seconds per question. That is a suggested strategy, not an AWS rule. If a question is taking too long, use the review features available in the exam interface and return to it later. Candidates who need accommodations should check AWS's current eligibility and request procedures before scheduling; do not assume that extra time will automatically be added to an appointment.

The 15 unscored questions allow AWS to collect information about question performance before those items are considered for use as scored questions. They do not contribute to your exam score, but you are not told which questions they are. Difficulty is not a reliable clue: an unfamiliar or unusually worded item is not necessarily unscored. The sensible approach is to answer every question to the best of your ability. AWS states that unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and that there is no penalty for guessing. If you are unsure, eliminate weaker options and provide your best remaining answer.

AWS reports the AIF-C01 result on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, with a minimum passing score of 700. A scaled score is not the same as a raw percentage, so 700 should not be interpreted as a guarantee that answering 70% correctly will pass. AWS uses scaled scoring to account for differences in difficulty across exam forms. The exam also uses a compensatory scoring model: you need to pass overall, rather than achieve a separate passing score in every content domain. Avoid preparation advice that promises an exact number of correct answers needed to pass.

Start with the content domains in the current exam guide, then practise applying that knowledge in different response formats. AIF-C01 covers AI and machine learning fundamentals, generative AI fundamentals, applications of foundation models, responsible AI, and security, compliance and governance for AI solutions. Study why a service or approach fits a requirement, not just its definition. For instance, you should be able to distinguish a model-quality concern from a privacy or governance concern in a business scenario. Format familiarity helps you express that understanding accurately, but it cannot compensate for gaps in the concepts the question is testing.
